The core expression of Ballechin 10-year-old single malt Scotch whisky, a heavily peated variant from Edradour, takes its name from the silent Ballechin distillery near Edradour. Previously, Ballechin releases from Edradour were part of The Discovery Series, which featured maturation in various casks including Sherry, bourbon, and a selection of wine casks. This particular 10-year-old expression, however, is matured in a combination of ex-Oloroso Sherry and ex-bourbon casks. It presents an aroma of oily malt with hints of burnt ends, BBQ char, apple, and fig. On the palate, one can taste chewy dates and oak, with smouldering peat contributing a spicy heat. The finish retains a subtle hint of ash.
