White Peak Distillery, a Derbyshire-based drink maker, is gaining a notable reputation for its whisky, and its Small Batch series exemplifies this prowess. The latest slightly peated release, bottled at 47.7% ABV which is higher than the previous edition, matured in a mix of first-fill bourbon and STR casks with a higher proportion of American oak. These casks, chosen from the distillery's upper dunnage where warmer temperatures influence wood extraction, impart distinct characteristics. Bottled at 100% natural colour and non-chill filtered, it has a bouquet of sharp green apple, vanilla ice cream, and toffee popcorn, accented by cinnamon and black pepper. On the palate, it delivers a rich nutty malt, accompanied by notes of orange peel, custard, cinder toffee, and a hint of bonfire smoke. The finish offers subtle hints of butterscotch, sandalwood, and coffee.
